Fish oil has been used since the 19th century in England for a variety of health benefits.[1] These benefits have been studied since research has shown that Inuit people in Greenland, who consumed a healthy amount of fish oil, had a lower risk of heart disease.[2] Fish oil, among many other foods, is a large provider of omega-3 fatty acids.

Our bodies make most of the fats that we need from other fat or raw materials; however, our body cannot produce omega-3 from scratch.[3] Omega 3, an essential fatty acid, is extremely important for human health.[4] Other than fish oil and fish, omega-3 can be found in vegetable oils, nuts (especially walnuts), flax seeds and flaxseed oil, and leafy vegetables.[5] Omega-3’s are also sold in supplement form – either gummy or pill.

The health benefits of omega-3 are endless. It is extremely important for you to have the proper ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 (another essential fatty acid).[6] Omega-3 tends to help reduce inflammation, while omega-6 tends to cause inflammation. The typical American diet contains as much as 25 times more omega-6 than omega-3, which is way too high![7]  Here are some reasons why we need to start focusing on omega-3:

1. Omega-3 can help to promote brain health during pregnancy and early childhood life.

It is proven that infants who have omega-3 deficiency, because they did not get enough omega-3 from their mothers during pregnancy, are at risk for developing vision, nerve problems, and brain health problems.[8] Essentially, omega-3 fatty acids are necessary for the development of children’s brains and other parts of the nervous system.[9]

2. Omega-3 can improve risk factors for heart disease.

One of the best ways to prevent heart disease is to eat a diet full of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats (this includes omega-3s).[10] It has also been shown that omega-3 can help to lower the risk of death, heart attack, stroke and abnormal heart rhythms in people who have already had heart attacks.[11]

3. Omega-3 can assist with high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

There are many studies that show that omega-3 can lower blood pressure and can lower high cholesterol.[12] These studies show that omega-3 fatty acids can help to lower cholesterol in people with hyperextension and taking high doses of omega-3 can help with untreated hyperextension. Of course, a physician will need to be consulted before taking such high doses.

4. Omega-3 can combat depression and anxiety.

Some studies show that symptoms of anxiety and depression improved for people who consume omega-3 regularly.[13] There are also studies that show that omega-3 can improve postpartum depression.[14]

5. Omega-3 can help to reduce symptoms of ADHD.

This is true especially in children. Some children with ADHD may have lower levels of essential fatty acids and a study shows that these children with lower levels of omega-3 had even more learning and behavioral problems.[15]

6. Omega-3 can help to improve skin and eye health.

Omega-3 can help to keep skin cells healthy by preventing premature aging.[16] Omega-3’s can also help to prevent macular degeneration, which is an eye condition that can lead to blindness.[17]

7. Omega-3 may help to reduce risk of certain cancers.

Lower risks of colon cancer, breast cancer, and prostate cancer have been linked to people who eat diets that are rich in omega-3’s.[18]

8. Omega-3 can help lower the risk of Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in the joints. Symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis such as joint pain can be reduced for people that regularly include omega-3’s in their diet.
